Solomon Cutner, piano - The Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Rafael Kubelik
HMV ALP 1172 1957 LP/matrices: 2XEA432/3 -3N. Recorded: 3-5 September 1952 - Kingsway Hall.
Inconsistent in recording/performance + a plethora of tape-edits..the 1947 Brahms PC.2 is on Historical (also the Schnabel/Szell PC.1) Sleeve-note >>>
Solomon plays...Brahms PC.2 + Bliss PC + Liszt Hungarian Fantasia >>>
Thanks a lot. A pity Solomon did so few recordings. His Brahms and Beethoven are like an electric shock...
ReplyDeleteHave almost all of his Beethoven/Brahms as original LP's + the re-issues.
DeleteThe Brahms sonata sounds very powerful as the ALP - but some traces of 'wear' would need to be edited-away - the original ALP's of the Beethoven seem superior to the 7LP box-set reissue.
I never completed the Tribute box which also contains Chopin & Brahms (Handel Variations - have also on 78's).
There's an interesting transfer, from late-1950's Tape, of the Emperor concerto @ https://concertsarchiveshd.fr
Thanks for the link to concertsarchive !
Deletehttp://www.rene gagnaux-2.ch/j_repertoire/brahms_op15_solomon_bp_jochum_14_11_1954. In case you missed it, a great performance of the 1st concerto
ReplyDeleteBeen many years since looked at Rene's site: I generally only download a few items that may be of interest.
DeleteNever understood this 'great performance' cachet: do people go out of their way to create bad performances?
Have quite a lot of brand-new 1950's ALP - never going to upload them unless they they perhsps need a wet-clean (for my listening) - though had considered the Brahms PC2 ALP Rubinstein/Munch which seems OK (as with the Curzon/VPO/Knappertsbusch LXT)..
Muito obrigado por este trabalho.
