Orchestra Filharmonica di Roma conducted by Massimo Freccia
Reader's Digest RDS 5003/5009 12LP set: 1961 Decca LP's / matrices: L70Y6506/7 & 6517/8 - 1W/2W, ** (1976 set RDS 9178) Label pics >>>
Thank you Frank. I remember these discs (in fact I think I may have the box set somewhere, in one of its manifestations). but I have never heard the "Susanna's Secret" track. Memory tells me that Kammenoi-Ostrow is lovely, and that his Rhein Journey is a riot. Freccia was a little "no-nonsense" but many conducting pedagogues were (eg Swarowsky). Perhaps they didn't encourage self-indulgence. I have read that he had a poor opinion of many leading conductors, and that his memoirs are caustic.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if RD/Gerhardt went to the expense of sending the Decca/Wilkinson recording team to Rome.
I recalled you liked the Rubbishstein - so as I'd a second set (unplayed?) that appeared to be covered in Pigeon do-do - thought I'd try to clean a few.. Sadly, don't have another box that contains La Mer / Tchaik - only segments of those. There are additional LPO Tchaik (1962) in the big Tchaik box that had Horenstein 5 + bits scattered elsewhere - allegedly the Gerhardt's 1812 there is the same performance as Freccia's in another 'coffee-table compendiumm- not checked that claim out.
ReplyDeleteThese are presumably RCA-recorded: a mystery in that box are the Desarzens/Vienna - as they don't appear in Stuart's Decca discog. Bet you play 'Aida' more than once!
Frank. Thanks for these. We are massive fans of Freccia (grossly underrated). Keith thinks (rather vaguely!) there is a tape in store with Freccia conducting Rach's 2nd symphony. I'll send him with a spade to dig it out!!!

Hello Theresa, Always interesting to hear an Italian Orchestra! (must admit I've been downloading (and watching) substantial volumes of YouTube Opera's: OperaVision + Bologna/Rome + Bolshoi/Mariinsky Opera/Ballet - so listening to Penny-Plain LP's has been rather restricted (not to mention downloading 600+GB of Movies..).
ReplyDeleteArturo Basile/Bologna turns-up on a 1967 RCA Victrola of Opera Preludes, etc- apparently dates from c.1959.
I had been tempted to upload the 1960 Serafin/Philharmonia (1970 CfP reissue) in that repertoire (the Mascagni not on CD)- the MfP/Verdi PO/RPO reissue was only a mono.
Trust these were decent-sounding: now use a complete Watts Manual Parastat/Aldi sudso..rather than just the 'wash-brush' - as on the KM RCM..
NB: Have finally resolved (after 2 years) Comments not being email-forwarded.
So now will be able to see the minimal amounts without checking the various Blogs!
