Many thanks!! Scotch
ReplyDeleteLots of effort goes into manually-editing a 60+ yo LP - so I get Really Miffed if there's no response to something which retains breathtaking clarity/dynamism - because, as distinct from any remaining LP sites, I don't fuck-em-up with software intervention - which can reduce them to near featureless Muzak (and yet which will attract comments of 'Superb').
ReplyDeleteThanks for your other 2 efforts: had only recently realized comments were blocked on that site (not that there have been many in recent times: just the downloading.......
Anyway - not much interest in this+Horsley upload - currently just over 220 - which is very poor by my standards.
Time to forget this, I suspect - and leave it to the Muzak Merchants.
Thank you for all your wonderful music
ReplyDeleteThanks for a fine reminder of Michelangeli's merits as a pianist. And speaking of Italian pianist, have you given any thought to investigating the recorded output of Orazio Frugoni? He made several fine recordings for Vox,
ReplyDeleteWithout checking Frugoni's VOX output - I've 2x Beethoven Sonata's LP's (PL7160 + PL8650) - the former got highly recommended: never played them - absolutely brand-new condition - CBS matrices/Decca pressed.
DeleteBack in 2012 scanned the sleeves of Brendel/Liszt PC1+2 and Totentanz/Malediction etc PL's - new copies - RVG matrices; the PC1/2 disc likely has different balances - sounded very vibrant - the latter has some tracks better as the Turnabout stereo (have lots of those)
One of the earliest MP blog uploads was Wuehrer's Dvorak PC (PL7630) - also have the PL Weber + 2x Schubert 8420/8590 + Prokofiev 3: no doubt Naxos will be doing those.
The Brendel/Marschner Schoenberg (PL10530) is REALLY good.. So 'take your pick' !!
Brilliant Classics released the Brendel/Liszt recordings as a part of a most uneven collection of piano concerti. They are very good performances and Michael Gielen kept exacting control over the orchestra. Frugoni has been overlooked, it appears, and I would love to hear more of his interpretations.
ReplyDeleteThe RVG mastered mono Brendel will sound quite different: but as the Michelangeli's been a Flopperoo (120d/l) unlikely to bother.
DeleteHaving sampled the 2xFrugoni they are excellent sound (CBS N.Y. 1951/4) - but absolutely won't wet-clean shop-new 70yo vinyl - so minimal declick will hopefully suffice..
Very many thanks for this mono version. your exemplary digitisation shows just how good HMV were by this date. one can see why Walter Legge resisted stereo. I have had the SXLP stereo Lp from 1974 since that release date. comparison with this mono demonstrates how clear and focussed the sound is, appearing more immediate. Performances beyond price but where on this site do we donate.
