You are not paying attention! [the 1952 VPO Brahms Sym.1 - issued by EMI the year before this - has been here since May 2012..]
ReplyDeleteHave rather few Furtwangler LP's in any case (doubt anyone would be interested in the 'commentary' disc from the DGG 'Memorial' box set from about 1964..) as suspect he was avoided by UK collectors - though do have the EMI Dacapo 'Fidelio' from the late 70's - which is better-sung than this (the females here aren't too good, 'IMO') - but had only fairly recently bought this amongst some opera sets - so, as the LP surfaces were nearly perfect, it was fairly easy to edit (though sometimes wondered if this derived from lacquers - not tape - as there were some strange 'blemishes' throughout...and also had to do some additional editing - badly truncated applause).
I believe the EMI CD issue says it is of the August 6 1954 performance. I know there have been all sorts of questions about what DG performances existed and were issued by various sources, but I just wanted to check that your note of Aug 3 as the performance date was not just a typo

DeleteI put 3rd August, as saw ('somewhere') that was the correct date - not the stated 6th (which is what's in the LP booklet/libretto (and with no mention of the spliced-in 1953 performance).
You'll also discover that I''ve correctly put down Mr Ernster's Christian-name - 'everywhere' seems to have copied EMI's typo of 'Deszo'...
Any comparison with the 1991 'remaster' CD sound -which I've seen quoted as superior to the LP's [US 'Seraphim's' - possibly imported German pressings?].????
